Understanding Fees

Students walking outside on city campus

When students have both in-person and online courses during a semester, they will have their combined University Program and Facilities Fee (UPFF) and Online Course Fee capped. The maximum charge will be the full UPFF plus one 3-credit hour online course.

Combined Online Course Fee/UPFF Fee Reduction

If a student is enrolled in both in-person and online courses, they may be eligible for a fee reduction. The combined UPFF/Online Course Fee cap will not exceed the UPFF mandatory fee plus 3 credits of the online course fee.

2024-25 academic year:
$694.90 UPFF + $105 ($35 x 3 online credit hours) = $799.90 Online Course Fee Cap

Summer 2025:
$272.15 UPFF + $105 ($35 x 3 online credit hours) = $377.15 Online Course Fee Cap

Students will see both fee types on their bill and will receive a "Fee Reduction."

University Program and Facilities Fee (UPFF)

This fee is associated with enrollment in in-person and web conferencing courses and supports the vital functions associated with residential, experiential learning at the university. Details and information about about the programs and facilities funded through fees are available at https://studentlife.unl.edu/student-fee-allocations.

Classroom Course Delivery

Classroom courses are designed to provide real-time interaction between an instructor and students in a group setting. In-person and web conferencing course delivery methods rely on real-time, face-to-face interaction in a traditional classroom or through a web-based video conferencing platform like Zoom with supplemental course materials made available through Canvas.

Online Course Fee

This fee is associated with the support and resources provided to instructors by the university's team of instructional design specialists within the Center for Transformative Teaching and individual colleges. Examples of support include designing course structure, preparing course materials, enhancing engagement and community for classes without real-time interaction, and methods for assessing student learning and maintaining academic excellence for highly flexible courses.

The Online Course Fee Cap does not include technology, library or other course and lab fees. Course and lab fees are specific to a course and charges on applicable courses will be indicated in the “Class Notes” of the section.

Online Course Delivery

Online courses are created with different methodologies and tools than classroom courses. These courses are designed to allow students to move forward independently through course modules without a traditional classroom experience. Most courses have an instructional designer and media services team who provide support to instructors to help design these modules. Online courses provide students with the most flexibility with their coursework.
